Exam paper entitled "Water is Life-But not for Everyone"

Hallo!Hello!Salut!Ahojte!¡Hola!

Dear Comenius friends,

I attend the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg-Oberstufen-Gymnasium in Bruchköbel, Germany and will partake in the Comenius project in Slovakia 2010. However, I will sit my final exams of secondary school from March until June 2010. In this connection I will write an exam paper entitled "Water is Life-But not for Everyone". In one part of my work I would like to know what "water" means to different people in different countries. Is it possible that some of you students could write some words about this and then send it back to me? It also can be just one word-if it describes what "water" means to you. This maybe sounds a bit abstract-but I guess with further explanation about my work I would influence your answers. So the meaning of "water" for you with regard to the title "Water is Life-But not for Everyone".

You can also find me in Facebook-maybe this is easier to reply?!

I am looking forward to meet you in Slovakia in April!

Thank you in advance!
Best regards
Fabian Dünow

In one part of my work I would like to know what "water" means to different people in different countries. Is it possible that you could ask some students (maybe 2-3) to write some words about this and then send it back to me. It also can be just one word-if it describes what "water" means to them. This maybe sounds a bit abstract-but I guess with further explanation about my work I would influence their answers. So the meaning of "water" for them with regard to the title "Water is Life-But not for Everyone".

  1. Résumé
    (English Version for Comenius Students)

    Dear Comenius-Friends,

thank again for your support! I could recognize through your answers that you are concerned with water. Below I would like to give a résumé of my exam paper entitled “Water is Life”.

Water is life! Without water the existence of the earth would be impossible. But the water that is accessible to people is threatened by extreme weather, climate change, extension of drylands, huge water consumption, by waste and pollution. In the future, there will be an increasing competition for water, which runs parallel with increasing demand and decreasing supply.

Currently, about 800 million people live without access to fresh drinking water. International organizations such as Amnesty International, Fédération Internationale des Droits de l'Homme League or Terre des Hommes call for a halving of this number by 2015 and by 2025 access to drinking water and sanitation for all people. At the same time, global warming has to be limited, the pollution of water has to be stopped, increased research in the field of water supply and sanitation has to be financed. They demand public and international responsibility for water and finally a proper enforcement of the human right to water.

I would like to join this call and to draw new attention to the responsibility people from developed nations have towards people in less developed countries. Without water no life would possible - it is a good that decides over life or death. The access to fresh water should be declared as a human right by the UN to create consciousness of its importance. However, this would not change anything without concrete improvements. If there is no water or water is polluted, it kills.

In industrialized countries appreciation of the elixir of life which has been lost due to industrialization has to be re-established. Education based on sustainability begins at this point:

Water is Life! ----> Let´s us learn this by heart!
